RESEARCH CENTRES, GROUPS AND FACILITIES
Alberta Ingenuity Centre for In Situ Energy (AICISE)Development of an underground refinery to recover and upgrade the oil sands is the objective of this centre. There should be virtually no greenhouse gas emissions, limited consumption of natural gas and negligible water and diluent requirements. The research focuses on the development and ultra dispersion of nanoparticle-sized catalysts within the reservoir. The key will be providing the optimum temperature for the catalysts to generate hydrogen from steam or some of the bitumen. This will require the development of innovative monitoring of the underground conditions through fluid chemistry, seismic and geochemistry techniques. The Ingenuity Centre is part of the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy.Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education (CBRE)CBRE is a unique multidisciplinary collaboration between the faculties of Engineering, Medicine, and KinesiologyThe University of Calgary has been engaged in biomedical engineering research for over 30 years, and has developed a strong reputation as a leader in numerous fields. Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE)CEERE is entrusted with the development and growth of multidisciplinary research and education programs in Environmental Engineering and Energy and Environment. CEERE's mandate is to bring together learners, educators, researchers and industry participants to benefit from a team-based approach for tackling current and future environmental challenges in Alberta, Canada and world wide. Centre for Project Management Excellence (CPME)The Project Management specialization at the University of Calgary is jointly sponsored by the Schulich School of Engineering and the Haskayne School of Business. As such, the program is one of a kind in Canada, offering expertise in both engineering and business. International Institute for Infrastructure Renewal and Reconstruction (IIIRR)IIIRR is a multi-university international consortium which provides overall leadership in research, education, planning, design and implementation for mitigation of the impact of natural disasters and infrastructure renewal and reconstruction projects in tsunami affected or underdeveloped regions. Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE)
ISEEE was established in 2003 to provide leadership and coordination
for developing and implementing energy- and environment-related
initiatives at the University. Pharmaceutical Production Research Facility (PPRF)The Pharmaceutical Production Research Facility (PPRF) is a state-of-the-art level II tissue culture laboratory with an attached pilot plant. Researchers have an extensive and impressive amount of experience in a multitude of bioengineering areas, including the development of human viral vaccines, protein expression, pharmaceutical scale-up, modeling cell behaviour and the development of bioreactor related technologies. More recently the focus has shifted to stem-cell bioengineering. Pipeline Engineering Centre (PEC)The Pipeline Engineering Centre at the Schulich School of Engineering leads the advancement of knowledge in pipeline engineering to meet the needs of the domestic and global pipeline industry through a broad multidisciplinary approach. It is a research leader in pipeline integrity, maintenance and management; new pipeline technologies; and project management. Pine Creek Research Centre (PCRC)PCRC, a joint initiative of the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary, addresses the water challenges facing Albertans, Canadians and the world. Reservoir Simulation GroupReservoir simulation is a developing application technique for reservoir development and management. It can be used to forecast the production behavior of oil and gas fields, optimize reservoir development schemes, and evaluate the distribution of remaining oil through history matching. The Reservoir Simulation Group’s scientific research is focused on mathematical modeling, numerical methods, scientific computing, computer simulation, parallel computing, and the supporting mathematical analysis of partial differential equations arising from energy and environmental modeling. Schlumberger iCentre
The Schlumberger
iCentre is a state-of-the-art immersive 3D visualization facility. The effect
of all the screens and projectors is a virtual 3D environment. This system
tracks the movement of the participants within the environment, creating an
outstanding visualization opportunity.
Tomographic Imaging and Porous Media (TIPM) LaboratoryTIPM Laboratory is a University of Calgary affiliate that conducts research in the areas of flow through porous media, chemical reactor engineering, environmental engineering and bioengineering. This facility is one of the largest tomographic analysis laboratories in North America. Research highlights include enhanced oil and gas recovery, magnetic resonance sensor development for the oil and gas industry and the environmental industry, and research on multiphase flow phenomena in chemical reactors. The institute has patented technology on magnetic resonance multi-phase metering and wastewater treatment using a photocatalytic reactor. Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Research Groups
