DIVERSITY AT THE SCHULICH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
Women in Engineering
The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary encourages and supports women in engineering. It has been recognized with three national awards from the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation for its Women in Engineering activities, it is the first engineering school in western Canada to appoint a female dean, and it has among the largest number of female faculty members and female undergraduate students of any university in Canada.
Aboriginal Students
The number of Aboriginal engineers in Alberta and in Canada at large is much smaller than it could and should be. The Schulich School has a special admission process for Aboriginal applicants. We have several spaces in both first and second year set aside for Aboriginal applicants. We strongly encourage Aboriginal students to apply to the Schulich School. We also work with students who are interested in engineering and are in the process of upgrading their high school education either through Mount Royal College's Aboriginal Education Program or any other upgrading program. Every Fall we welcome both our new and returning Aboriginal students at a reception in the Native Centre.
International Students
The population of international undergraduate students has been rising every year and is currently over five percent. As part of a larger emphasis on international education and research, our goal is to have ten percent of the undergraduate students coming from countries outside Canada. Every fall we welcome both new and returning international students at a reception in the International Student Centre.
